Why must art be static? You look at an abstraction, sculptured or painted, an entirely exciting arrangement of planes, spheres, nuclei, entirely without meaning. It would be perfect, but it is always still. The next step in sculpture is motion.
When we first went in to the Calder exhibit at LACMA, I could not resist blowing on some of the pieces to see if they would move. They did and it was wonderful.Second time in, we are told, "no blowing on the art, and no photographs".
Great show, and lucky me, being able to see some in motion.
